Ezekiel 37:4-5
Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.
In captivity, Ezekiel undoubtedly knew firsthand of tragedy, loneliness, and a sense of abandonment. Ezekiel also knew of spiritual hopelessness. Temples destroyed. People enslaved. Forced displacement. Pressure to assimilate into Babylonian society. It can be easy to feel that way at times here, too. Political chaos. Racial unrest. War and genocide. Economic uncertainty. “Son of man, can these bones live?” I replied, “Lord GOD, only you know.”
Lord God, only you know, says Ezekiel. Only you know, says Josh. Only you know, says you (most likely). Like you, I have whispered to God … unfortunately a lot lately. Wondering why we are in this place, as a city, nation, and world. Why kindness and humility seem to have disappeared. Why fear tactics and propaganda fuel us more than hope and peace. Why the news headlines that we read or watch simply take our breath away.
Is God’s breath really on its way? Lord God, only you know.
